How to reduce your electricity bill in Spain
Electricity bills in Spain have risen significantly over the past few years. The good news: there are several effective ways to reduce them without changing your lifestyle. Here is what works.
1. Switch to a cheaper supplier
Spain has over 300 active electricity suppliers competing for customers. The difference between the most expensive and the cheapest can exceed 40% on the energy term alone.
The process takes around 15–30 days, and there is no interruption to your supply. You do not need to do any paperwork — the new supplier handles everything.
Average saving for households: €35–45 per month.
2. Optimise your contracted power
Contracted power (measured in kW) is what you pay regardless of how much electricity you actually use. It is one of the most overlooked costs on the bill.
Many households in Spain have contracted 3.45 kW or 5.75 kW when their actual peak usage would be well below the higher figure. Check your maximum demand by looking at the highest reading in your billing history, then ask your supplier to reduce your contracted power accordingly.
Typical saving: €10–20 per month on the power term.
3. Switch to a time-of-use tariff (2.0TD)
Spain’s standard residential tariff (2.0TD) divides the day into three price periods:
- Peak (08:00–10:00 and 18:00–22:00): most expensive
- Flat (10:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:00 and 22:00–24:00): mid-price
- Valley (00:00–08:00 and 14:00–16:00, plus all day weekends and public holidays): cheapest
Shifting heavy consumption (dishwasher, washing machine, electric vehicle charging) to valley hours can save 20–35% on the energy term.
4. Apply for the social bonus (bono social)
If you are retired, unemployed, or have a household income below certain thresholds, you may be entitled to discounts of 25%, 40% or even 65% on your electricity bill.
Many eligible people never apply simply because they do not know it exists.
5. Consider solar panels
If you own your home, solar photovoltaic panels typically pay back their investment within 5–7 years in Spain, thanks to the country’s high solar irradiance and available subsidies. Monthly savings of €40–80 are common for a typical household installation.
